Bachata is the Dominican Republic's music of the people. Its name comes from an African word meaning "informal", once a put-down for anything outside upper-class taste. Born from bolero and son heard on AM radio, it took shape after 1962, when Radio Guarachita began recording its first artists. The güira, steel-string guitars and the requinto built its sound, and the 1990s added the driving mambo. Danced close, with hips, rotations and a tap, it remains the heartbeat of Dominican social life. It has later evolved into Bachata sensual fusion in Spain adding waves and new instruments.
